Wi-Fi guaranteesĪ Wi-Fi guarantee is a service or commitment from your broadband provider to ensure you get a strong Wi-Fi connection in every room of the house. ![]() ![]() Of course, buying Wi-Fi boosters separately is one way to go, but you could also explore options with your broadband provider. You can also get a twin pack of Wi-Fi routers for about £80-100, if you’re certain you will need two straight away. Standard third-party Wi-Fi boosters will usually cost you between £20 and £50. If so, a Wi-Fi booster might be what you need. If your internet speed seems fine after testing it next to your router, go to the room or area that you’re having issues with, and test it again to see if it’s any slower there. But if you haven’t had the correct training, don’t attempt anything that an engineer should be doing, such as rewiring your phone socket. In that case, you should contact your broadband provider and report your fault to see if they can provide a quick fix.Īlternatively, visit our internet connection problems guide to see if you can fix the issue yourself. If your speed is still a lot lower than you think it should be, it’s unlikely that a Wi-Fi booster will help, because your distance from the router won’t be the cause. A good way to find this out would be to run an internet speed test while you’re right next to your router. So it’s important to check the following things first.įirst, check if your slow internet isn’t because of a problem with your home broadband connection or your router. However, it's not necessarily the only answer to slow broadband. If you're struggling to get decent Wi-Fi in some parts of your house, a Wi-Fi booster might be just what you need. But it’s best to place it a fair distance away from your router to maximise the reach of your Wi-Fi. Most of them plug into a mains socket, so you won’t have completely free reign of where you can put them. Equally, if you want to connect to your router from your garden or an outbuilding, a well-placed Wi-Fi booster can help you do this. Wi-Fi boosters can help to boost the Wi-Fi connection and ensure you have a strong signal all around your home. So if you have rooms that are quite far away from it, or even metal separating your walls, such as a rolled steel joist, its Wi-Fi range might not be strong enough to reach every corner of your house. Your Wi-Fi router’s signal can only reach so far. What is a Wi-Fi booster and how does it work?Ī Wi-Fi booster (also called a Wi-Fi extender or repeater), is a small wireless internet device that increases the range of your home Wi-Fi. Read on to find out more about how Wi-Fi boosters can improve your internet speed and where you can get one that’s right for you. With working from home becoming the norm and TV being increasingly available on mobile devices, it’s more important than ever to have a strong and consistent internet connection in every room. They can be supplied by your broadband provider as part of a whole home Wi-Fi service, or bought separately from a number of tech retailers. It will help to improve the strength and range of your Wi-Fi signal, so you’re able to connect to the internet in every room of the house. If you’re unhappy with the strength of your home internet connection, you could benefit from a Wi-Fi booster. Secondly, as Minimal APIs are a relatively new technology, some features from controller-based APIs might be missing. Firstly, organizing REST API into separate controllers would make the code more readable and maintainable in an enterprise-grade application with a large number of endpoints. Of course, there are some disadvantages to using Minimal APIs too. Because there is less code and a much more simplified bootstrapping, the methods representing the endpoints become easier to both compile and execute. Some people not only tolerated the centrifuge, but strove to test its limits-and their own. So you have to develop an entirely new method, keeping the lungs almost fully inflated at all times, and giving rapid little pants ‘off the top.’ ” Michael Collins recalls in his 1974 autobiography Carrying the Fire: “If you breathe normally, you find you can exhale just fine, but when you try to inhale, it’s impossible to reinflate your lungs, just as if steel bands were tightly encircling your chest. One objective of such ordeals was to teach an astronaut to counteract the G demons by using breathing techniques and muscle contractions. “You were straining every muscle of your body to the maximum…if you even thought of easing up, your vision would narrow like a set of blinders and you’d start to black out.” “Whirling around at the end of that long arm, I was acting as a guinea pig for what a human being might encounter being launched into space or reentering the atmosphere,” Glenn recalled in John Glenn: A Memoir. So if we’re going to develop these ballistic profiles, how much can people take? It was a great unknown.”įor the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronauts, the “wheel” was both a rite of passage and an invaluable training tool. “We were talking about reentry and during takeoff, long-term exposures. “We did the early Mercury training of John Glenn and Schirra and all the rest of those guys just to learn what happens if we go up to these sorts of accelerations in these different vectors,” Shender says. The centrifuge’s flight simulation capabilities made it possible to reproduce all the ways various spaceflight scenarios could affect astronaut performance. “We were really worried about what was going to happen when we started spaceflight,” says Barry Shender, a biomedical engineer and specialist in acceleration stress who worked at Johnsville. It started operating with the training of pilots for the North American X-15 hypersonic aircraft and hit its stride with the Mercury manned spaceflight program. The Johnsville centrifuge rose to stardom at the beginning of America’s space program. Simply by turning the gondola as it spun about the arm, experimenters could subject pilots to positive Gs (“eyeballs in,” with acceleration in a head-to-foot direction), negative (“eyeballs out,” foot-to-head, similar to a rapidly descending elevator), transverse (chest to back), and practically every other variation that might be experienced during flight. Researchers reveled in the opportunity to study G forces under controlled conditions at levels previously accessible only in high-performance aircraft. This enabled the centrifuge to be used as a “dynamic flight simulator,” capable of accurately reproducing the sensations experienced by pilots in various flight maneuvers. The dual-gimballed gondola, mounted to the arm on rotating bearings, allowed the test subject to be oriented in various positions relative to the applied G force. (The oblate sphere gondola was later replaced with a 10-foot-diameter sphere.) A 4,000-horsepower electric engine at the other end whipped the arm around a huge chamber. A high-performance centrifuge, a machine that could produce high acceleration and thus high G-forces by rapid rotation, was the only solution.īy July 1950, inside a giant round 11,000-square-foot building at its Johnsville facility, the Navy had completed the world’s largest centrifuge, which consisted of a 10- by six-foot oblate sphere steel ball, or gondola, at the end of a 50-foot arm. In his 2006 book Getting off the Planet: Training Astronauts, Randall Chambers notes, “Very early in the space program, amusement park rides were considered as possible research vehicles to study acceleration forces.” But Chambers, the scientist who trained all the early astronauts, soon realized that such machines wouldn’t take the extreme forces and sustained abuse needed to conduct serious studies on humans. For almost 50 years-it ceased government operation in 1996-the centrifuge was the world’s most powerful and versatile tool for studying the G forces that are an inescapable part of flight. The Johnsville human centrifuge-the machine everyone loved to hate-was operated by the Navy at its Naval Air Development Center (later the Naval Air Warfare Center) in Warminster, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. Apollo 11’s Michael Collins called it “diabolical.” Time magazine referred to it as “a monstrous apparatus,” a “gruesome merry-go-round,” and, less originally, a “torture chamber.” John Glenn called it a “dreaded” and “sadistic” part of astronaut training. The pawn is the least powerful piece and is worth one point. The starting position with pawns highlighted. White's pawns are located on the second rank, while Black's pawns are located on the seventh rank. When a game begins, each side starts with eight pawns. Now, let's explore each chess piece in more detail. It captures diagonally one square forward. Pawn - Moves one square forward, but on its first move, it can move two squares forward.Knight - Moves in an ‘L-shape,’ two squares in a straight direction, and then one square perpendicular to that. ![]() Bishop - Moves any number of squares diagonally.Rook - Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically.Queen - Moves any number of squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically.King - Moves one square in any direction.Let's meet them! How The Chess Pieces Move Each side starts with 16 pieces: eight pawns, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, one queen, and one king. There are six different types of chess pieces. The chess pieces are what you move on a chessboard when playing a game of chess. In this article, we learn about all of the pieces-specifically, where they are placed when a game begins, how they move, and how they are valued. When learning the game of chess, there is no place more important to begin than with the pieces. (The designer started drooling, just a little, when he first described them to me.) The point is the rotary function is smooth and adjustable. I won’t delve into the inner workings of the head block and bearings. In the past I have criticised this jaw type for the screw near the jaw tips, they tend to project and interfere with tying – thoughtful shaping and recessing all but eliminates that issue. Jaw tips are crucial if one ties small flies, these jaws are very well designed and made a couple of quite complicated shapes and some clever mechanics mean with a hook in place the tips align almost perfectly and I have excellent finger access. The tips of vice jaws inevitably wear but these are strong, should outlive most users. View the jaw tips from the side and they are pointed, view from above and they have meat and strength. Large hooks, up to 9/0(ie, very large hooks) can slip into a notch or “pocket” several millimetres back from the jaw points so the Swiss Vice can handle big hooks. Then tighten the nut and the angle of the arm and hook height and angle is fixed: a complicated mechanism, but a very complete design solution and simple to use, which is what really counts. Slacken the star nut and the head can move up and down while the hook remains level – in fact there’s slight play in that movement so I can adjust and fine, tune the hook angle as it reaches the positioning tool. ![]() How about adjusting the height so the hook is on the axis of rotation? Vice makers have devised a wealth of ways to deal with that problem, this uses a clever arm which is actually two arms. So, I can confidently place the hook in the jaws with the hook-shank horizontal. The same feature means I can release the jaws and the hook stays put! The Swiss Vice has spring loaded jaws, so I squeeze the rear of the jaws to position my hook which is held in position before the lever applies grip. Small hooks are the bane of this jaw type, particularly vices with simpler double screw mechanisms hooks either fall out before the tightening screw is adjusted or they fix securely but at the wrong angle. Hook sizes are highly adjustable and exact. ![]() Cam surfaces push the rear apart and the jaws tighten. The Swiss Vice jaws have a small sculpted screw near the jaw-tips to adjust for the hook size, try to get the jaws parallel, then lift the lever at the rear of the head. The simplest form of this clamp is two plates side by side, one screw, nearest the holding end, pulls the plates together while another at the rear, farthest from the griping end, pushes the plates apart. The C-Clamp version comes with a smaller lighter slightly more conventional clamp.Ī familiar jaw type, essentially a parallel or engineer’s clamp, on the end of a bent arm. I was supplied with a pedestal base so I can cover another permutation. Exactly the same jaws, arm and stem fit to the Master, Base and C-Clamp versions. Obviously, this is an in-line rotary vice. If that really is all you want, stop reading now. Slip a hook into the jaws, lift the lever until it clicks and locks the hook in place… then tie a fly. This thing fairly bristles with features, original design thinking and applications, but it is an elegant functional tool, and as with most good tools, it’s easy to use. Just describing the Swiss Vice in detail could take more than the space I have in these pages. ![]() Click on the article's images to see it at readable size. |
